Fernando Martinez has been involved in competitive tennis for over 35 years as a player and a coach. He is a certified USTA High Performance Coach and participated in the High-Performance Continuing Education Seminar at the US Open in 2016. He is a PTR Certified Professional since 2004. He is a Certified Tennis Performance Specialist by the International Tennis Performance Association and is also Etcheberry Certified in Strength, Conditioning, and Movement for Sport.
His experience includes working as personal coach for touring pro Ajla Tomljanovic in 2009 and 2010. Under his guidance, Tomljanovic climbed over 350 spots in the WTA Rankings to a then career-high ranking of 154 (September 2010). He led Tomljanovic to her first appearances at the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open. He also served as the Director of Men's Tennis at Evert Tennis Academy. Most recently, Martinez served as co-owner and director of Magallan-Martinez Tennis Academy. He started his career as the Graduate Assistant for the NCAA Division I UCF Knights, helping guide them to consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference Championships and NCAA Regional appearances. As a player, he was one of Costa Rica's and Central America's top juniors and represented his country in countless individual and team events throughout his junior career. He was a six-time member of the Costa Rica Davis Cup team. He was also a member of the 35 and over team that represented Costa Rica at the ITF Senior World Tennis Championships in 2014 and the 40 and over team in 2018. He played intercollegiate tennis at the University of Central Florida, where he played as a starter in singles and in doubles for the majority of his playing career.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from UCF in 2000. In 2004 he earned a Master of Business Administration degree and a Master of Sport Business Management degree from UCF.
